Skyrim (Of Shivs and Shiv Dealers)

Back on the Skyrim horse. In the process of completing a quest where I had to get myself arrested and thrown into a mining prison. Part of the quest was obtaining a shiv. Why do I need a shiv? So I could shank the guy who I just got the shiv from. I guess you could say I pulled a "try before you buy" on the shiv dealer by taking his shiv out for a test shank.
